How To...

Get The Most From
A Visit To The Doctor!

When Going To See A Doctor For The First Time…
BE PREPARED!

There are some things an individual can do which may help them get the most from their visit. It’s always a good idea to make a list ahead of time which outlines what you want to tell the doctor.

On this list, one would want to include all the symptoms they are experiencing. Also, anticipate what questions the doctor will ask you. Examples of things a doctor will ask about are as follows: How are you sleeping? How is your appetite? Are you having pain anywhere? Are you having any problems with concentration or memory? How is your energy level lately? Are you having any problems with anxiety or mood?

It is also helpful to have written down your past medical history, any current medical problems you are being treated for, and medications you are currently taking. Also include any herbal supplements or vitamins. If you take several medications, bring the prescription bottles with you for the doctor to look over. Be sure to mention if you have any medication allergies.

Other things a physician is likely to ask you about include things such as family history of any medical illnesses, mood disorders or psychiatric illnesses. The doctor will also want to know some of your social history and whether you have ever had any problems with drugs or alcohol. If you’ve had any blood tests, procedures, x-rays, etc., and then try to get copies of those results to take with you to the appointment.

When scheduling your appointment, try to get the earliest appointment time of the day as the doctor will be less likely to be running behind. Also, write down the name of the office staff you speak to in case you need that information later. There will usually be a significant amount of paperwork to be filled out prior to seeing the doctor so try to arrive 20-30 minutes early to complete it. If you want to save some time, then ask the doctor’s office staff to send you the paperwork so you can fill it out in advance. You will also need to bring your insurance card with you to the appointment.

Establishing a good relationship with the office staff can beneficial as you will likely receive quicker responses to any future questions or needs that may
arise. Be sure to ask about how calls are handled after hours and what you should do in case of emergency. Also ask what the office procedure is for refills of medications.

It is very important that you fully understand any instructions the doctor may give, therefore it is a good idea to ask the doctor to write these down for you so that you don’t forget. If the doctor says something that you don’t fully understand then ask them to clarify it for you. Be sure to ask about any potential side effects of medications prescribed. Being prepared for a doctor’s visit can lower your anxiety level, save you time, and make you a better health care consumer.
