Imagine getting the news that your child has a serious illness. A diagnosis like asthma or diabetes would have you searching for professional help to get your child the care he or she needs. Illnesses are usually diagnosed when you notice problems your child is exhibiting and then report these to the doctor who then investigates further.

Most parents are quick to recognize that they are not equipped to diagnose or manage these physical illnesses on their own. However, when it comes to the mental health of our children we are not so quick to seek professional guidance.

So when is the right time to seek help? It is time when you notice symptoms that cause you concern. You do not have to know that your child has a significant problem or a specific diagnosis to get help. You just need the concern that your child may have a problem. Seeking professional advice for these concerns can either help put your mind at ease if the symptoms are normal, or help you become an informed parent who knows how to help your child if they do have a problem. A Licensed Mental Health Professional can assist by evaluating and assessing the symptoms. If treatment is recommended and pursued, not only will the child benefit, but you as a parent can attain tools to better help you assist your child.

What does it mean about you as a parent if you need to seek help for your child? It means you care. You do not have to wait for your child to develop significant behavioral or emotional problems before you seek help. Be aware and informed on how you can aid your child in maintaining good mental health.
