Whether we realize it or not, many occupations and hobbies today may leave us vulnerable to excessive noise exposure. While Americans spend significant time and money each year on preventative healthcare through blood pressure and cholesterol screenings, eye exams and other routine doctor visits, approximately 28 million people suffer from hearing loss.


Noise Can Be a Factor:

Hearing loss can be caused by a number of factors including aging, illness and noise exposure. The type of hearing loss typically caused by noise exposure is known as high frequency hearing loss. With this type of hearing gloss, individuals are often able to hear vowels but have difficulty with softer consonants and high-pitched sounds. Conversation can also become difficult. For example, an individual may mistake “first” for “thirst” or “wish” for “which” in a sentence or they may not be able to hear the microwave, doorbell or children’s voices
